OLLANTAYTAMBO
at Present
The present time in Ollantaytambo
The current town is situated on the same space as its ancestors, in the same and ancient buildings. The straw roofs had been replaced by tiles that give Ollantaytambo a modern style. The streets still keep their Incan names and have energy and water.
If you have the chance to spend the night in Ollantaytambo, you must take a walk through its stone streets at dusk. The orange light of its lanterns gives the environment a very special color.
Useful data
- Ollantaytambo is a mandatory stop that lasts one hour and a half on the railway between Cusco, Puente Ruinas (Machu Picchu) or Quillabamba.
- The station is located at the intersection of Patacancha River and Vilcanota River (Urubamba)
- You can buy local handicrafts near the river.
How do we get there?
By road:
Buses
- They depart from Tulumayo Avenue (in Cusco) several times a day.
- If you come from Urubamba, you can take the combis at the gas station of Mariscal Castilla Avenue.
- In order to return to Cusco or go to Chinchero, you can take the buses at the Main Square. Remember that, on the afternoon, the frequency decreases so you have to take the necessary precautions.
Taxis
- You can rent a taxi at $10, from Ollantaytambo, so as to go to the town of Chilca.
- Renting a taxi an entire day costs $50 approximately.
Tours
- Getting there by means of a tour organized by an agency costs $5 per person approximately.
By train:
For your convenience, we will show you the itinerary of the train to Machu Picchu and Cusco during high seasons. Ollantaytambo is, as we said before, a mandatory stop.

Lodging and food
Very close to the train station, you can find the best lodging alternative, the modern Hotel Pakaritampu, which provides all the services of a comfortable three-star hotel. Paying $59 a night, you will have at your disposal hot water the whole day, heating, laundry, restaurant and Internet service.
Another choice is the Albergue Ollantaytambo, a rustic and pleasant place that offers hot water, sauna, a beautiful garden and food with the previous request.
If you want a good but more economic offer, we recommend you the Hostal Tambo and the Hostal Miranda, which provide lodging for a 3-dollar fee per person.
At the main square there are some places to eat, we suggest the Bahía restaurant, where you will be able to enjoy a delicious orange juice and the famous corn with cheese.
