This circuit, embedded in the highlands of Peru, offers you beautiful and picturesques towns, as well as a trip by the highest navigable lake in the world.
Urcos, 45 km far from Cusco by the asphalted road to Puno is a small town with a beautiful lagoon where, according to the legend, Huascar threw a huge gold chain in order to avoid the Spaniards took it. In the town, you will also see a stone church with a mural painting known as the Baptism of Christ.

To arrive at this place, you should cross Andahuaylillas, at 40 km far from Cusco, with a main square dominated by a colonial church decorated beautifully, and Tipon where you will find astonishing work of terraces.
After nine hours travelling, you will get to Juliaca: the biggest city in Puno where they have the unique airport in the whole department and the rail station where trains connect to Arequipa, Puno and Cusco. At 3824 m.a.s.l., the main activity in Juliaca is basically its commerce. From here you can detour and take the road to the pinturesque town of Lampa at 23 km far from the city. Visit the church of the Inmaculate, where there is a copy of the Piedad (Mercy)of the Archangel Miguel.
To go to Puno you should go back to Juliaca and follow the asphalted road during 45 km. There, have a walk by the city but drink coca tea and take a rest in advance to get used to the altitude (3827 m.a.s.l.). Puno was founded in 1668 at the banks of the Titicaca river (highest navigable lake in the world). It has diverse attractions surrounding it such as the chullpas of Sillustani: huge stone constructions with conic shapes at 34 km far from the city. Chucuito , just at 18 km far from Puno, is also a town that you can not miss as it is one of the oldest and very important town during the colony. In the main square we find the churches of the Asuncion and Santo Domingo built during the XVII and XVI centuries.
PISAC - PAUCARTAMBO
CIRCUITS
This option will allow you to immerse in the culture and the tradition of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, admiring the remains of the archaeological wealth in this area.
Once you are in Cusco, you can take a bus or a taxi to go to Pisac, one hour far from the city by an asphalted road. Keep the eyes wide open as the landscape is really marvellous along the trip.
The small town of Pisac, at 2950 m.a.s.l. is the entrance door of the Urubamba valley or the Sacred Valley. It is very famous for its traditional and colorful Sunday fair where you can find local handicrafts and beautiful weavings among many other objects. We recommend you to visit its church of colonial origin where they still celebrate masses in Quechua.
If you are in Good physical conditions, you can visit the archaeological site of Pisac. It is located at the top of a hill. Pisac was an important fortress to watch the capital of the Inca Empire. As going up, you will observe the group of amazing terraces and at the top you will see the Intihuatana or solar watch as well as other perfect walls and several rooms built with very refined stones.
To get to Paucartambo you can take the alternating route to Pisac. It is a roadbed petrating towards the northeast. The route pass by Huancarani and Huambutio to go down during four hours and some dust as far as the fertile valley of Paucartambo. Once you have arrived, you will have your reward: a town of strong colonial remains an embedded in the valley at 2900 m.a.s.l. Its white houses with blue balconies, are matching the sky. The sky of the same bright blue and its stony streets welcome you. Its old bridge, church and small squares seem to have been trapped by the time.
Paucartambo is also famous for the festivity of its patrones: the Virgen del Carmen (Virgin of Carmen) celebrated on July 16th. The quiet town becomes, during a week, a festive and colorful place with tenths of groups of masked dancers and custome groups area celebrating with processions, music and firework. If you have plenty of time and energy get upt at dawn to go to Tres Cruces at four in the morning. This is a belvedere located at 35 km far from Paucartambo (3 739 m.a.s.l. ) where you will admire the most spectacular sunrise.
