The town of Chinchero maintains a traditionally religious spirit that reflects the syncretism of the worships brought by the Spaniards and the sentiment of the Andean man. Its main celebrations are centered on the Virgin Natividad and the Lord of Coyllur Riti. The parties involve the whole town and they are characterized by their particular coloring.
The Coyllur Riti (14, 15 and 16 of June)
About 50 thousand Peruvian and foreign pilgrims arrive on foot to worship the lonely Lord of Coyllur Riti at the region of Sinacara. This pilgrimage is the hardest in the whole country. Devotees ascend up to 5,000 m.a.s.l. and have to withstand minimum temperatures of -4°C.
The Corpus Christi
After the Coyllur Riti pilgrimage, dancers take part in the Corpus Christi celebrations of Chinchero. This well-attended religious festivity starts on Thursday with the celebration of the festivity mass. Afterwards, they carry out the Saints Procession, in which you will be able to see the Mamacha Natividad, Saint Isidro, Saint Michael, Saint Anthony, and the Purified Virgin among others. Once the journey had finished, professional dancers compete in a colorful parade. Each costumed group exhibits its best choreography and most attractive costumes before an examining jury. On the afternoon, the chacharpari begins and the persons in charge of the festivity overwhelm the visitors with attentions offering them drinks and the traditional chiri uchu.
Virgin Natividad (September 8th)
It is the most important celebration of Chinchero, since it is the festivity of the Patroness and Life Majoress of the district. Festivities start with a mass in honor of the Virgin Natividad. Towards noon, people carry out a traditional procession in where the image is accompanied by dances and colorful costumed groups. On the afternoon, they hold a beauty contest and in the night there are serenades, music and fireworks.
The Cruz Velay (2 and 3 of May)
Just like in all Andean towns, the Indian tombs or temples were replaced by crosses. The Cross Festivity in Chinchero starts on May 2nd with the Cross Vigil, in the middle of songs, prayers and music. The following day, crosses are brought down from their altars in order to be taken to mass by the people in charge of the festivity.
