Tourist Attractions:
Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
With more then 32 thousand hectares, the Inca Sanctuary of Machu Picchu has been recognised as Cultural and Natural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. More than 300 bird species live on the surroundings along with more than 200 classes of orchids.
The sanctuary can be accessed in three different ways: by foot through the Inca Trail (which means that the trip can take hours or days, depending on the starting point), by train or by bus. There used to be a helicopter service, but it has been suspended because it puts the archaeological remains in danger.
The trip by train lasts approximately four hours and it allows appreciating a wonderful landscape. If you take the tourist train you will enjoy all the commodities of a modern means of transportation: toilet, bed and restaurant onboard, besides resting areas. On the other hand, if you choose the popular train, which is cheaper, you will enjoy the direct contact with the autochthonous inhabitants of the zone.
These two options and the bus are complemented, since both run alongside and through the Hiram Bingham Highway, named after the explorer to whom the discovery of the so-called "lost city" was attributed in 1911, although there are opinions that dispute this as being a fact.
The train service has installations for lifting wheelchairs and ample aisles for your best comfort. However, in the case of the buses not all the firms have the necessary facilities for the disabled, so you would rather ask for this service at the bus line you are thinking on travelling on.
Although the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu cannot be modified for being Patrimony of Humanity, most of the place can be toured with the assistance of a team of properly trained people. (See "Other Services" in the section Cusco").
Do not feel discouraged at the sight of the thirteen steps leading to the box-offices, because many parts of the sanctuary are accessed ascending through several flights of stone stairs only. The existence of the farming terraces, which are constructions proper of the ancient Peruvians, facilitates much of the way.
One of the most impressive places that can be visited with the assistance of guides is the Temple of the Three Windows, which offers a panoramic view of the site. The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, which offers the service of restaurant and cafeteria, is located on the border of the archaeological site, while the restrooms are at the entrance of the site, beside the medic post, adjacent to the box-offices. The visit to this archaeological site is highly recommendable. It is regarded as one of the wonders of the world due to its extreme historical and natural beauty.
Telephone: (51-84) 21 1067.
Working hours: Mondays through Sundays from 6:00 to 17:30 hours.
Thermal Baths
There are these thermal baths that may have medicinal properties at 800 metres from the Town of Aguas Calientes, which is precisely the name of the town (Hot Waters) due to its sulphurous waters coming up from the rocky subsoil. There is a steep trail with stairs that borders the mountain leading to the place. The Inca Trail starts at the Town of Aguas Calientes. The thermal baths are not accessible for persons with restricted physical mobility, due to the difficult access; although, people with minor disabilities can enjoy a restoring bathe. In order to provide a better service, the Municipality of Aguas Calientes has built especial facilities such as dressing rooms, restrooms and a cafeteria. There is a series of pubs and restaurants along the way, where you can enjoy the hospitality of the local settlers and have a chat with visitors coming from all over the world.
Handicraft Market
It is a local market where all sorts of handicraft and handmade products can be purchased. There is enough room between the vending stands and their height allows comfortably appreciating the goods for sell from a wheelchair. The surface of the ground is of unpaved earth.
