Textile art in this place is worldwide recognised by the quality of the materials used such as the "baby alpaca" (wool from the first cut) and by the especial designs. In general they reproduce paintings of andean women, low houses of andean towns or Inca monuments. If you want to purchase an excellent product, we recommend you to buy an imitation of this textile of Inca culture.
Pottery is another important art in this town. The most notable sample is the aribalo: a container made in different sizes generally representing the Incas. The pottery from Cusco is decorated with external shapes while the designs of the jungle come from old believes and myths.
Another famous artisan representation in Cusco are the retablos: multicolor objects made with plaster where they show different little figures. There are also multicolor wood retablos with sambleņos (little characters of saints, magicians, children, etc). Finally you can not miss the wonderful paintings from Cusco especially the paintings in water color which are real master pieces cheap enough to buy them.
Among the jewels, you will find earrings, bracelets, collar and orejeras(earflaps) similar to the jewels found in Inca tombs. Silver work is also good. The most important is the Lineas (lines). Thus, in Cusco you will find the most varied jewellery you won't be able to miss.
We only recommend you to go shopping to stores offering you guaranties especially if you want to buy gold pieces such as tumis, earrings, bracelets or collars.
You can purchase all of these wonderful objects in shops and artisan fairs of Cusco and districts of the valley. The artisan fair of Pisaq offers you the best hats, tapestries, sweaters, pottery and wonderful coverlets of alpaca skin.
Only one detail more: We suggest you not buying products done with feathers, stones or the skin of wild or endangered animals as well as pre-Columbian pieces. It would be a deep offence against nature and the history of the city.
