CUSCO TEXTILES
Fabrics were very important in the Andean world. Apart from being daily used, they had ritual and magic purposes as well as being used to pay taxes and remunerated services. For this reason, even nowadays, they are experienced weavers. Their hands make a wide variety of products in alpaca or sheep wool dyed with vegetal dyes: chumpis or bands, ponchos and chullos, llicllas (shawls), gueperinas and uncuņas that women use to carry whether their babies or diverse products.
Sunday fairs of Pisac and Chinchero are traditional places to buy fabrics. While being in the city you should visit the Museum Shops of Josefina Olivares and Sons and Santa Clara. Here you can find fabrics from all the regions in Cusco and even from adjoining departments.

The most outstanding feature of these clothes, weaved in the last fifty years, is that they are not produced thinking about the tourist but about the quechuas and aimaras Indians. The pallaes shown in their cloth are very varied: stars, plants, condors and horses, vizcachas and even trucks but they are so stylized that they harmonize with the rest of the designs.
Silversmith work in Cusco is also a heritage of ancient Prehispanic and Colonial traditions. For instance, the tupos have andean origins: those ornamental needles used by the women peasants to tie their cloth. These objects are also worked in copper and have a rich decoration in the head of the needle with animal and vegetal features. Some of the techniques kept by the silversmith of Cusco are also of prehispanic origin like outlining the models in mud mixed with alpaca and guinea pig fur.
Working with Candles is another popular art growing in Cusco. This phenomenon has appeared because the decorated Candles and wax Candles are frequently used during numerous religious celebrations. In the street Meloc, few blocks far from the Main Square, the visitor will find the biggest quantity of candle shops.
Among the most experienced artisans we find the Moreno family. The pioneer of this tradition was Mrs. Rosa Moreno who died in 1988. She learnt the secrets of this art from her grandfather who was very skilful making decorative Candles and wax Candles. The descendants of Rosa Moreno continue with the family tradition making Candles with aniline, purpurin and tinsel in order to have the bright and the chromatic rich that characterized its decoration.
The size of the Candles varies from miniatures of one centimeter to huge Candles of two meters. These artisans also prepare designs according to the customer requests.
