CUSCO ARTISTS
The Mendivils
Hilario Mendivil and Georgina Dueñas de Mendivil belonged to a selected group of artists that made of each piece a real master piece. Their images became famous due to the finesse of the features, the stretched necks and the refined work of ornamenting and gilding primed cloth used to imitate the costumes. Harquebusier archangels and Virgins of the Milk, Birth-house and Last Dinner ornaments were the favourite of these artists. Although the best pieces of the Mendevil are in the museums and private collections, the visitor can admire some of them in their family house located in the Square of San Blas that is now known as the Hilario Mendivil Museum.

The Olaves
Antonio Olave, an artist as the Mendivils, has reached international popularity due to his Manuelitos. The tender showed in the faces of these images, the skill to paint the pink face and details such as the palate of mirror, the teeth of bird feathers, crystal eyes and natural hair has become the model that many artisans try hard to imitate.
Santiago Rojas
The art of Santiago Rojas, from Paucartambo, is also outstanding and varied. This eighty-year old artist makes three kinds of work, all of them characterized by the same quality: religious images, masks and little figures in Costumbrismo style (a style that respects the regional and local customs and features) representing dancers of different dances in the festivity of the Virgin of Paucartambo. Don Santiago learnt the secrets of his art by restoring images from little churches of the town. For this reason he thinks his technique was the same used by the artist during the colony.
The grotesque saints of Merida
Edilberto Merida was internationally recognised when he introduced the grotesque detail in the sculpture pottery by deforming the gestures of his characters in order to emphasize the dramatic effect and by stretching the hands and feet. Merida inspired on religious and costumbristas characteristics. His work of Christ with the expression of pain is very important. He used clay, paste and wheat flour.
