CONVENT AND MUSEUM
of
LA MERCED
Address: Plazoleta Espinar,Calle Mantas 121.
The Museum of La Merced is one and a half block far from the Main
Square. This religious museum is on the ground floor of the main cloister.
The valuable collection of canvas of the Cusco School of Painting decorates
its walls and represents to the saints related to the Merced Order
and with the redemption of the Christian caught by the Moros. Some
of these pieces are said to belong to the painters of Cusco: Basilio
Santa Cruz and Ignacio Chacón. A very important piece is the one about
the life of Saint Pedro Nolasco. In front of the patio in a small
room, we can admire the famous Custody of La Merced as protected as
it should be becasue it is one of the most valuable jewels of Colonial
Cusco. Among its ornaments, it is outstanding a huge irregular pearl
known as "syren". In the same room we can admire silver pieces, liturgical
clothes embroidered in gold and silver, as well as sculptures such
as Christ in ivory. But the most important paintings belong to Bernando
Bitti: The "Inmaculada Concepcion" (Immaculate Conception) and "The
Crown of the Virgin". It is worth to mention the piece of the Gloomy
"Crucificado" (crucified) owned by Zurbaran. One of the most attractive
parts of the museum is the prison of the father Salamanca. All the
walls of this humble room are covered with paintings of biblical scenes
that remind us the religious spirit of its famous inhabitant.
