THE FOUR BUSTS HOUSE
Address: Calle San Agustín 400 (Base of the Libertador Cusco Hotel)
Telephone: 23-1961
The Four Busts House belonged to the spanish family of the Marquis
Salas Valdez. It is located in 400 San Agustin Street, and it is decorated
with rose windows and columns in relief. The lintel is carved in only
one lithic piece and we can see four busts and the nobiliary coat
of arms.
House of conquerors, this house of Plateresque inspiration, is an exceptional testimony of how proud the main families of Cusco were of deriving from the first Spanish inhabitants. This is proved not only by the archaising style of its portico but also by the astonishing use of four stone relieves with some other family portraits. For this reason, the house received the popular name that still preserves up to our days.
The owners of The Four Busts House
For a long time, the identity of these characters was forgotten. A detailed documental research performed by the historian Luis Enrique Tord revealed their names at last. They were the conqueror Juan de Salas and his wife Usenda de Bazan along with his first-born son Fernando de Salas Valdez Bazan and his wife Leonor de Tordoya y Palomino. All of them are wearing clothes according to the time of Felipe II.

Its outstanding place reminded every pedestrian of its age and the social importance of its inhabitants.
One of the advantages of this house was that it had running water. In 1567, Juan de Salas Valdes asked permission to the "cabildo" to take water from the river and install water pipes.
The facade
The facade has decorative elements such as fluted columns and large flowers similar to the ones seen in the House of the Admiral. It also has the nobiliary coat of arms above the lintel and the mullioned window which in this case is situated opposite the main entrance and forming an axis with it.
The patio
The layout of the patio with stone arches in the four angles and a water fountain in the middle reaffirms the social importance of the building. The whole structure has been recently restored and joined to the Libertador Hotel as well as the adjoining building.
